I have been to many chess tournaments over the years and they all typically were dull and difficult. It was not the Australian heat which made my sweat drip onto peoples boards it was the atmosphere. The parents would stand around and ask me about chess and is it really a sport?
Yes, chess is a sport with hundreds of millions of players is what I would answer them and they would not be left looking certain. One day I asked a mum why were they unsure of their kids playing chess instead of being outside or down at the beach? This mom’s response surprised me; she thought a sport had to include the spectators and had to be loud and fun!
I tried explaining that in chess the fun was on the inside and that the beauty of chess came after time and even for me the words rang hollow. At that time, I was using Tarka in secret with my private students and did not want to say “there is something I am working on!” Of course chess is a sport but for Tarka I did not want it to be a repeat of chess.
Here is what I have focused on to make Tarka a new sport and be accepted.
Sport Creation Tips
Sport Tip 1
Get really really good! Whatever it is become a master of your craft and drill with regularity. In my case I worked on Tarka theory for 2 decades inventing Openings and Game Plans so that right from the start Tarka had a large body of work. I knew I had to be proficient in all aspects of the game. I am not fast Tarka player and so I focused on becoming good in the fundamentals.
Sport Tip 2
It is hard to get noticed in a small pond!!! If you want to draw attention you have to be willing to travel and go where you have to. If no one sees you then opportunity won’t just knock it will ignore you. For Tarka I went from Australia to the Philippines to Bali to Lithuania!
Sport Tip 3
When you are having an off day be sure to be positive and supportive to your team. Getting selfish helps no one and will slow down your progress. It is ok to not be always on and happy. I have had my bad days, after spending weeks on the couch bed in Lithuania I almost left to go to the hotel and turned all the lights off early and acted like a goose!
Sport Tip 4
Don’t exclude people no matter how busy you are! Protect the people who get you there and keep all the doors open. Your friends and family make it all worthwhile. In my case it is my friends who have joined me on this crazy journey.
Sport Tip 5
Pay attention to everything and don’t ever take your eye of the ball! Look beyond the sport to your support and ake sure all your needs are met and your happy. Don’t settle for less than what you need or your will burn out.
